Oulike Wenke

Groete, Sanette Ralph, Gordonsbaai

Tiger's Tale

Tiger is an Africanis/Greyhound flavoured dog, rescued by the Kleinmond Animal Welfare Society around a year ago, after he’d been tied up for far too long and mauled by a Boerbul and who knows what else. The scars all over his body show a life history of battling to survive. He stayed at KAWS so long, that the affectionate staff referred to him as furniture. Astoundingly, Tiger remained good-natured throughout and was used there, to test new male arrivals with. He’s the mellowest dog you’re ever likely to meet.

He’s a big dog, with the kind of musculature Greyhounds have and amazing power in those four long legs of his too. His eyes are set in a way that, if he were human, we might call Asian. He is a striking chap, with gracious manners to suit. And did I mention how laid back he is? This is a dog who, when my own ebullient teenager of a puppy, Solo, plays and thumps a paw down on his head, merely lowers it a bit and chooses either to play, or to ignore her completely, as if he were rolling those pretty eyes and sighing, “Kids!”

Onskuld is 'n kaalvoet kind

Ek onthou die dae toe briewe nog goudwerd was, skoenbokse vol briewe, verjaarsdag kaartjies, troukaartjies, fliek kaartjies, plakkertjies, gegeurde koeverte, 'n boekie seels, ons almal het 'n hele paar van hiedie kosbare Pandora se boksies gehad, briewe oor en oor gelees ... gelag of gehuil aanie herinneringe van daai spesifieke oomblik, briewe in lint omgedraai, geseel met n soen of drukkies en soentjies. Ek dink aan al my briefies van God, sommiges kon ek optel en hou, ander in my geheue gebere, soos platgedrukte roosblare in 'n bybel of 'n woordeboek. Daar was die hartjiesklip padlangs een more, om my te herinner van Sy Liefde vi my, die pragtige skulpie, die mooi sonsopkoms, die pragtige ligstroom uit 'n venster innie hemel, die prentjieswolke op 'n reendag, 'n lewensgrote reenboog, die spierwit vlinder uit nerens wat op my bors kom rus het. So baie koesterbriewe van my Hemelse Vader, elkeen meer waardevol as goud of edelstene.

Reader Photo of the Day

Did you know that South Africa's only large scale commercial producer of mushrooms was right here in the Overberg? Well now you do, and people all over South Africa are getting a little bite of Hemel en Aarde (literally!) every time they eat a Woollies one. But our photo of the day does not concern fungi of any sort. What a great shot of horses on a gorgeous landscape. Thanks to LandnSand reader and the mushroom farmer himself, Schalk de Beer, for this one.

More snow!

Just when you thought it was safe to break out the shorts and admire the spring blossoms ... winter decided to turn its icy breath and blast our mountains with yet more snow. Things went as far as snowball fights on top of Table Mountain!

Where is Spring?

You'd think by now we would be watching the mountains turn greener and grassier and flowers appearing - and there is some of that around, but with severe weather warnings for the Western Cape yet again, who knows?

Enjoy these lovely photos from our readers in the Helderberg and Overberg. Thank you Michelle Kovar, Loren Rutherford, Nikki Swanepoel and Herman van Bon!

Calling All Hackers and Photographers

Nope, not LandnSand. Wikipedia.

You may already have seen some amazing photographs of South African monuments online, showing the September Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition. With 1392 monuments, the Western Cape is well represented. There is still time to enter and there are monuments in both the Helderberg and Overberg to photograph. We'd love to see your photos!

But wait, there's more. The Wikipedia Hackaday is calling for the legal hacking of content to Africanise it for Heritage Month.
