  1. Castle of Good Hope – One of the oldest buildings in the country, there are various accounts of ghosts including Lady Anne Barnard and Van Noodt. Non celeb ghosts include that of a soldier who hung himself in the bell tower, mysterious footsteps in the dungeon and a black dog.
  2. Grootte Schuur Hospital – A nurse who shot herself, a nurse with white eyes, a helpful but dead Sister Fatima (the grey lady) and a man who died trying to escape from the upper floor – these are the ghosts of Grootte Schuur.
  3. Tokai Manor House – New Year’s Eve, 1900 … a young larney accepts a dare to ride his horse around the living room. The horse gets spooked by the jol and bolts off the stoep, killing itself and its rider in the process. Visitors have reported seeing the even re-enacted.
  4. Jac Loopuyt Huis – Sometimes referred to as the ghost house of Rondebosch, or the spook house. Rumour has it that it was occupied by a weird cult in the 70s; since then, the tales are of doors opening and closing by themselves, and sightings of a see through old dude.
  5. Rust-en-Vreugd – Now an art museum, visitors have reported hearing mysterious footsteps and being watched by the ghost of a woman from an upstairs window. Stories of dogs snarling at a portrait of Lord Charles Somerset may indicate art and political criticism rather than the presence of a ghost, however.
  6. Simon's Town Museum – A haunted painting of a young woman that cannot be photographed.
  7. Admiralty House - A dead naval officer and a woman in a grey dress.
  8. Leeuwenhof Estate - Tales of lights that turn on and off for no reason, an old lady haunting the ground floor and also, a young woman who died of heartbreak.
  9. Groot Constantia – Another celeb spook, apparently Simon van der Stel has been seen haunting his way to the pool to bathe of a morning.
  10. Green Point Lighthouse – Here you might meet the ghost of a one legged lighthouse keeper.

You can read first person accounts of poltergeists all around the Western Cape here.

Here are some animals you can get up close and personal with, without them rolling your car. And we're not talking formal game reserve experience either. Without further ado, let's meet some of the Western Cape's furry and feathered citizens.

Although it weighs in at around a mere 4kg, the dassie's closest relative is ... the elephant.

10 Cape Town Memes

January 28, 2014 By:

First of all, there are the Cape Town lifestyle memes. With all its holidaymakers and tourism accolades, plus it being the 2014 World Design Capital, you could be forgiven for thinking that the world aspires to be Capetonian ... There is certainly a Johannesburg/Cape Town rivalry.

This one refers to the e-tolls inflicted upon Jozi.

Elephant Warning Signs

January 28, 2014 By:

After the recent rolling of a tourist's car by a bull elephant in the Kruger National Park, which resulted in the elephant being shot and global news stories about the injuries sustained by the humans involved, it's important to draw attention to the fact that elephants are not safe and cuddly animals. If you're visiting a game reserve, hoping to see these magnificent wild animals, it's a good idea to get to know a little about them first.

First of all, game reserve rules are there, not to spoil your fun, but to keep you safe. When you're told not to get too close to the animals and not to get out of your vehicle, it's for the protection of both you and the animals.

The annual Stellenbosch Harvest Parade celebrates the start of the grape harvest season in the Boland as well as the very popular Stellenbosch Wine Festival.

Members of the local farming community trek through the town of Stellenbosch to the rhythm of Cape minstrel groups and marching bands. Whether on foot or catching a ride on tractors, trucks, trailers, farmers and farm workers have the freedom of the town on that day.

The 2014 Stellenbosch Wine Festival runs from 24 January to 2 February and includes a wine expo, sporting activities, special events on wine farms, wining and dining events, art exhibitions, restaurant promotions.

Working under the authority or SANParks and Cape Nature, the VWS is becoming an invaluable asset to the Western Cape and especially the communities who border the reserves and wildlands. This unit is made up of brave people. People who shoulder their kitbag, don their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and head up into the mountains and deep into the valleys. This is not work for the faint-hearted, as the heat and smoke is intense and leads to the ritualistic global firefighter motto "Safety First".

“One Team, Seven Challenges”
Just under 700 multi-sport athletes gathered at Gordon’s Bay Beach Front on Saturday, 11 January 2014 to partake in the action of the 12th annual Totalsports Challenge presented by Liberty Medical Scheme and REHIDRAT® SPORT.  Hugo reclaimed the Totalsports Challenge Champion title completing the 7-disciplined event, which is a combined distance of 123.5km of racing, in an impressive time of 07hours 06minutes 53seconds.
“Finishing second to Stuart Marais in 2013 and crossing the finish line first today were two great experiences for different reasons,” said Hugo.  “The 2013 event was an emotional struggle where I was forced to race till I had nothing left, scraping the barrel.  Today I didn’t have to do that, which is great as I have another race in two weeks time.  Totalsports has invested a lot in multi sport.  As a Totalsports Ambassador I am stoked to bring it home for them today and am very happy to have their label on my chest,” says Hugo.  Brett Van Coller came in second, while Simon Oosthuizen finished third.
