Blog | Interesting Reading and Articles from Land n Sand

It's Women's Day in South Africa on the 9th of August 2013 and LandnSand has decided to declare it women's month, celebrating all women. What better way to start, than with one of the heroes this day is named for.

Lilian Masideba Ngoyi was one of the leaders of that monumentally important women's march back in 1956; she was also the first woman to ever be elected to the ANC's executive committee, when the acronym still stood for freedom and decency. She only joined in 1952 (she was born in 1911) and by that stage, she was a seamstress and a widow and had two kids and a mother to support. Her first arrest was before that, she was arrested for using a whites only post office. She was writing a telegram to DF Malan.

Soul Soup

In my mind, writing a blog is a bit like cooking a stock; hours of intermittent attention, distracted thought, focussed action. Writing a blog is a bit like making a stock too, I think, because it all starts with the kernel of a thought.

There’s something very soothing, caring, even loving, about making a stock. Whenever I really feel down, when I battle to get off the couch and when a hot bath just doesn’t do the trick, I make a stock.  Doesn’t matter if it is lamb, chicken or beef.  Fish is no good though, it doesn’t take long enough.

Brodie Link (Medium)
1.5 hours (off the Hangklip Trail)

The lively and interesting Kogelberg Biosphere recently opened another stunning hiking trail, called the Brodie Link. An offshoot of the main Hangklip Trail - beloved by many - it's an easily accessible hike through some of the most beautiful fynbos around. At only 90 minutes (approximately) it's also idea for a good and leisurely stroll with your family, cameras, sketchbooks, or whatever takes your fancy.
