The Brewery is situated in the bustling business district of Paarden Eiland, Cape Town. It recently underwent a massive upgrade with its capacity doubled. This means more of the golden nectar flows from its tanks on a daily basis. We no longer do brewery tours and have replaced it with a purpose built Tasting Room situated in the Cape Quarter. Plenty of good beer available, expertly served from 10 taps. We recently commissioned a 7.2KW solar pilot project. The system consists of 24 locally manufactured 300W Solair solar panels and produces 14500 KW/Hours of electricity per year, roughly 10% of our energy…
To hope to compare the Blue Rock Oktoberfest with the Hofbräuhaus tent in München is to engage in very unrealistic assumptions and expectations. Dragging a German friend along to act as litmus for the event was perhaps just as misplaced an idea. Our initial impressions were not eased by a rather long queue at the gate and a particularly mournful and grey morning, nor by the fact that we'd had other engagements later in the day and couldn't stay long enough to see how the party developed. This Oktoberfest was a particularly ambitious event, marrying a craft beer expo with…

Rocking the Keg

June 17, 2019
A cable water ski resort turned craft beer host. Somewhat incongruous, is it not? My first thoughts as I entered the strangely hidden grounds of Blue Rock, on the corner of the N2 and Sir Lowry's Pass Road. On the dam, obstacles and ramps, and a confusing array of pylons and cables. On the right, a paintball course. Paintball and beer? Now that could be something interesting ... The occasion is a media launch for a new Oktoberfest, celebrating another launch, that of Red Sky Brew, Gordon's Bay's very own craft brewery. Somerset West, as are the many farms and…
When: Saturday 5th October 2013Where: Blue Rock, Sir Lowry's Pass The Blue Rock Oktober Fest is a spring celebration featuring 24 craft beers, various markets & a wakeboard competition. In conjunction with Deep Blue Events and Marketing & Monster Energy, there will be 60 different craft markets as well as skateboard ramps where Monster Professionals will be displaying some awesome tricks and stunts.Highlights being a “Game of Thrones” wake boarding competition where only 3 winners will be crowned.
According to Food 24's Lucy Corne, one of the quirkiest craft beer breweries in South Africa. is right here in the Helderberg - Somerset West to be exact: "Triggerfish Brewing (Somerset West, Western Cape)Two things instantly set Triggerfish apart – its funky location in a former dynamite plant and the vast array of unusual beers on offer. Beers are brewed in a one-time anthracite store and served in the brick-walled taproom. Here you can sample around 15 of Triggerfish’s impressive 24-strong range of brews. Alongside familiar pale ales and stouts, you’ll find a pink-hued beer-wine hybrid, a blonde ale infused with buchu and…
I'm limping along the N2 after a pothole and a quick tyre change on Polkadraai Road. I’m going to a media launch – Beerhouse on Long is opening and they're not pulling any punches. I'm late. By the time traffic begins to thin, I'm in the city. The angels smile on me; an actual parking spot on Long Street! Bit of a squeeze, but there it is – right across the road from the right place, no. 223. At the door, I get a little black stamp on my wrist, an unused beer bottle cap and a promise of a…
“I'm not scared of work,” says Mark Goldsworthy. We're in an almost empty warehouse, just around the corner from where I live, in a small industrial area called Mansfield Industrial Park on the Western side of Gordon's Bay. Up against the one wall, two shiny new tanks and a modified wine barrel. Mark wants to try mashing in an actual barrel – far more interesting than a steel or plastic tank, and also a fair bit less expensive. It's called a mash tun, after all ... My question: does he intend having any employees on site? What work there is,…

Kelly, who is brewer Mark Goldsworthy's wife, tells us about the exciting new craft beer kid on the block. At this stage we're based in Gordon’s Bay. We have signed a lease in a little industrial park just outside Gordon’s Bay, where our neighbours are a combination of garagiste wine maker, artist and gourmet food importer!  The “brewmaster” is my husband Mark Goldsworthy who has a background in winemaking and viticulture, and the appropriate qualification from Elsenburg College. He has worked for some of the leading wine farms in the region – Kanonkop, Backsberg (both as more of a trainee/assistant…
Lizelle Wentzel, of the Cape Brewing Company, was kind enough to answer our questions too. Are you really a woman? In this lifetime, yes. Prove it. Can’t live without my vanitycase! What are your thoughts on Women's Day in South Africa? I wish I could do more to help people.
